David Bowie is among the artists who will write songs for the SpongeBob Squarepants musical, which is set to premiere in Chicago in June, ahead of its 2016-2017 debut on Broadway. According to a presser, the musical follows the titular character “who lives in a pineapple under the sea” – and his pals Patrick, Squidward, Sandy Cheeks and Mr. Krabs on a new, exciting journey. Producers describe the show as “a celebration of unbridled hope, unexpected heroes and pure theatrical invention.” Others enlisted to write for the show include T.I., John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Aerosmith, Dirty Projectors, Cyndi Lauper, the Flaming Lips, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T’s and Jonathan Coulton. It’s the first musical for the SpongeBob franchise, which previously spawned two movies – this year’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and 2004’s The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie.
