Newsday held a "That's So Long Island" competition to determine the area's most iconic person, place or thing. There were 520,000 readers of the magazine that participated in making Billy Joel the winner.
Winning by almost 900 votes, Joel beat out competition from bagels, Jones Beach, Billy Crystal, The Long Island Medium and nearly 60 other celebs, foods, places and activities.
"I'm from the working man's Long Island, Levittown. Massapequa," said Billy in the article. "The working men and women live out east. And I want to be among them."
The accolades are pouring for Joel lately as earlier this week it was announced that he will receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in Washington, D.C. in November.
Previous recipients are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and the late Hal David, and Carole King.
