Bob Dylan sounded off at critics about his more recent work during his acceptance speech as the MusiCares charity’s Person of the Year. In the speech Dylan name-checked many of his contemporaries, questioning why he often lands in the crosshairs while others get a pass. Dylan began, “I’m glad for my songs to be honoured like this. But you know, they didn’t get here by themselves. It’s been a long road and it’s taken a lot of doing. These songs of mine, they’re like mystery stories, the kind that Shakespeare saw when he was growing up,” he began. But he quickly turned towards critics saying, “Critics say my voice is shot, that I have no voice. Why don’t they say those things about Leonard Cohen? Why do I get special treatment?” He continued, “Critics say I can’t carry a tune and I talk my way through a song. Really? I’ve never heard that said about Lou Reed. Why does he get to go scot-free?” Dylan recently released his 36th studio album, Shadows in the Night, which is a covers compilation of traditional pop standards made famous by Frank Sinatra.
