Bob Dylan may have invented the phrase “can’t even,” one music writer has discovered after listening to the singer’s recent 18 disc box set The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12. Chris Willman, writing for Billboard, explains, “Dylan grows increasingly frustrated by how he feels the Hawks [later the Band] are mangling ‘She’s Your Lover Now.’ ‘Aw, it’s ugly.’ ‘I can’t. I can’t even.’ Did Bob Dylan just invent the 21st century catchphrase ‘I can’t even?’ I think he did!” Dylan would ultimately leave “She’s Your Lover Now” off of his LP Blonde on Blonde, which he went on to record with Nashville studio musicians in 1966.
