Queen guitarist Brian May is expanding his horizon by getting into the virtual reality game with the release of the OWL Virtual Reality Kit. The OWL VR Kit is an upgraded version of the original OWL, allowing the use of a smartphone. A magnetic backplate slots into the OWL and then metal back plate is affixed to the back of the phone. “There’s a darkness to everything; people won’t want to leave their rooms,” May said as he tried on the Owl VR headset at the Owl VR launch event. “But that’s the way with most technologies: they bring a lot of good, but some darkness as well. People get frustrated and fatigued very quickly with other VR devices. They get frustrated that they can’t reach the controls on the phone and the eyepieces get sweaty… so I quickly realized, in some ways, this was a better way of viewing virtual reality.” The Owl VR, which will cost roughly $40 when it’s released in mid-June.
