Freddie Mercury and Rod Stewart were considered for David Bowie’s role of Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth, according to a new behind-the-scenes book. The book, Labyrinth: The Ultimate Visual History, written by Paula Block and Terry Erdmann in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary, features handwritten notes from director Jim Henson that state Mercury, Stewart, The Who’s Roger Daltrey, Ted Nugent and Van Halen’s David Lee Roth were also among Henson’s original ideas. It is also known that Henson had considered casting Michael Jackson, Prince, Sting and Mick Jagger in the role. Labyrinth: The Ultimate Visual History also reveals that Jennifer Connolly’s lead as Sarah almost went to Helena Bonham Carter.
