The Velvet Underground will receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming ceremony, according to Rolling Stone. In their consideration of the band for the honor, the Recording Academy wrote, “Despite a relatively brief lifespan and limited commercial success, the Velvet Underground are now recognized as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Comprising Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen ‘Moe’ Tucker, the band was, perhaps, ahead of their time, both visually and sonically. Often dubbed the quintessential proto-punk band, they’ve continued to be the benchmark for countless modern-rock movements over the past 50 years.” Other artists receiving the honor include Sly Stone and Nina Simone. The announcement was made by the Grammy organization on Monday, December 19. Additional artists, such as gospel singer Shirley Caesar, jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, country singers Charley Pride and Jimmie Rodgers will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards as part of the Grammys’ Special Merit Awards. The 2017 Grammy Awards will take place on February 12 and will be hosted by James Corden. Copyright(c) 2016 RTTNews.com. All Rights ReservedLess «
