Patti Smith had Michael Stipe as a surprise opening act at her New York Webster Hall concert on December 26. Stipe sang “Happy Birthday” to the poet/rock legend at the celebration of her 70th birthday. The set marked Stipe’s first substantial public performance in nearly four years and his debut as a solo artist. The six-song set included a mix of cover songs as well as R.E.M. songs. The singer opened up with his own rendition of Vic Chesnutt’s “Lucinda Williams.” Stipe then launched into the “Theme From New York, New York.” He then followed up with a version of Smith’s “Wings.” After that the singer delivered a cut for the fans as he performed R.E.M.’s “Saturn Return.” He ended his set with a a cover of Perfume Genius’ 2012 single, “Hood.” Smith is scheduled for another concert January 2 at Webster Hall. There has been no word if Stipe will again be the opening act. Copyright(c) 2017 RTTNews.com. All Rights ReservedLess «
