Warning: The VW SportWagen is NOT Your Parents’ Station Wagon.

Growing up, I remember going on these BIG family vacations in the BIG family station wagon. It was so big in fact, if we ever got pulled over, it couldn’t by the police, it had to be by the Coast Guard. Today, we’re talking about a whole new type of wagon—the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen.

At first glance, the VW SportWagen reminds me a lot of another car brand that starts with an S, and ends in “ubaru”. It’s just one of those cars that can do a lot more things than most people think. But the SportWagen is cheaper, has more space, a turbocharged engine and a much better warranty. Here are all the reasons why the 2018 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen is awesome.

01) Engine: Turbo, Manual & Mileage

In addition to the standard automatic model, the VW Golf SportWagen is also available with a manual transmission. Good news if you prefer driving stick. Cars with manual transmissions tend to last longer and are generally considered more fun to drive.

The SportWagen already has a great 170-hp turbocharged engine. But 1.8L Turbo feature gives you some extra kick when you need it. The turbo option is incredible.

And this turbocharged car gets great gas mileage too. Posted mileage for the SportWagen is up to 25 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway.

02) All-Wheel Drive

One of my favorite features of the SportWagen in the 4-motion all-wheel drive. Generally, I wouldn’t be taking this type of car up the canyons of Utah, but holy smokes, it works as advertised. If you typically drive on snowy roads in the winter and rough terrain in the summer, then you’ll love the security of its all-wheel drive.

03) Dimensions & Cargo Volume

The SportWagen is also a lot roomier than you might think. Compared to the Subaru CrossTrek, the SportWagen has a lot more cargo space. Keep that in mind the next time you go on a shopping trip to Costco or Ikea.

VW SportWagen:

  • Cargo Volume: 30.4 ft³, 66.5 ft³ with seat area
  • Dimensions: 180″ L x 71″ W x 58″ H

Subaru CrossTrek:

  • Cargo Volume: 20.8 ft³, 55.3 ft³ with seat area
  • Dimensions: 176″ L x 71″ W x 64″ H

04) Warranty

We saved the best for last. The combined warranty from both Volkswagen and Strong VW is incredible. It blows the competition away. As with all Volkswagen cars, the SportWagen comes with a 6-year, 72,000-mile warranty. But the folks at Strong VW added a lifetime warranty to give you even more peace of mind and help save you money.
