After a “freak accident,” Allman Brothers Band’s founding guitarist, Dickey Betts suffered a critical injury to the brain and is now awaiting surgery. The guitarist was reportedly playing with his dog in the backyard of his home in Little Sarasota Bay when he slipped and hit his head on the ground, causing his skull to crack. After having sustained a mild stroke in August, Betts was forced to cancel his Summer tour, which had been rescheduled for this November, but a Facebook statement released by the band confirmed that they “obviously” stand cancelled. “It was just a few days ago that Dickey was telling me how excited he was to get back in front of the fans on November 1,” said David Spero, longtime manager of the band. “It is very unfortunate, for all involved, that we need to cancel those shows. Please add Dickey into your thoughts and prayers.” Presently in a “critical but stable condition,” Betts is scheduled to undergo a brain surgery on Friday, September 21, to reduce the swelling.
