John Lennon complimented Paul McCartney’s songwriting only once, the Beatles legend has revealed. “Once. Once John gave me a compliment. It was only once the whole time,” McCartney said during the program 60 Minutes. “It was ‘Here, There and Everywhere,'” the singer says. “John says just as it finishes, ‘That’s a really good song, lad. I love that song.’ And I’m like, ‘Yes! He likes it!’ ” The pair, McCartney and Lennon, were famous for being competitive. “I’ve remembered it to this day. It’s pathetic, really. We were competitive . not openly,” he added. “But we later admitted [we were]. He’d have written ‘Strawberry Fields,’ I’d write ‘Penny Lane.’ He remembered his old area in Liverpool, so I’ll remember mine.” McCartney is currently promoting his latest album, Egypt Station. McCartney announced last week that he will be releasing a children’s picture book titled Hey Grandude!, which will be illustrated by Kathryn Durst. The Beatles are also set to reissue their self titled album, better known as White Album in “a suite of lavishly presented packages” on November 9, to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
