The BBC recently announced that the third installment of its documentary series on David Bowie is set for release in early 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s iconic hit Space Oddity in 1969. Titled “The First Five Years,” the documentary will focus on Bowie’s pre-fame days and has been produced and directed by Francis Whately. The film will also feature many previously unheard audio recordings, exclusive interviews with past lovers, friends and family. “Making this trilogy has been an incredible experience for me, unearthing rare recording, footage and archive, and the privilege of speaking to so many of his friends and collaborators who were so open in talking about the Bowie they knew, loved and admired so much,” said the director, Whately. “He is possibly now even more famous in death than in life and I hope this film will bring some new understanding to this great artist from the early years of his incredible life.” In a short clip on Twitter announcing the documentary, Phil Lancaster, the drummer of Bowie’s band prior to his name change from Davy Jones to David Bowie, “David Bowie and the Lower Third” is seen reading out the criticism which they received from the BBC after an audition with them in 1965. “vocalist who sings wrong notes and out of tune,” the document describes Bowie. “Group has nothing to recommend it…the singer is a cockney type but not outstanding enough…backing a singer devoid of personality.” “Where are these people now?” asked a laughing Phil.
