Black Sabbath guitarist Toni Lommi recently sat down for an interview with Metal Hammer in which he discussed recording the band’s 1975 hit album Sabotage. With Metal Hammer rating the band’s “Symptom Of The Universe” as the “greatest guitar riff ever,” Lommi admitted that he doesn’t even remember coming up with it! “I imagine we would have probably been in rehearsal,” he said. “Dare I say it, but yeah, I’ve not had much trouble coming up with riffs,” he continued, saying that he gets ideas for guitar riffs all the time. “You never know when the magic’s going to strike.” Lommi also described the process of completing Sabotage as “a nightmare” due to the fact that the band was immersed in a lengthy battle with their ex-manager Patrick Meehan at the time. “We’d get a writ and we’d end up having to go into bloody court in the morning, all dressed up, then try to get back to the studio afterwards to carry on working,” he said. However, the feud inspired Geezer Butler, the bassist and primary lyricist of Black Sabbath, to write “The Writ,” and the band members’ aggression about the situation found an outlet in all the songs on the album; “There is some really heavy stuff on that record,” Lommi concluded.
