Much to the excitement of North American fans, it has been announced Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, a Jimi Hendrix documentary which ran on Showtime last year will be hitting the big screen this year. Directed by John McDermott and originally released in CD and DVD formats, the documentary revolves around Hendrix’s legendary performance at the Atlanta International Pop Festival on July 4, 1970. “Nothing articulates Hendrix better than Hendrix. We can yack all day long, but he’s the guy who grabs everybody,” said McDermott. “To see him on a film screen, larger than life, you get to really understand what he was about.” “And there’s so little of Jimi talking about his motives, his vision,” he added. “So it’s best for us to put him out there like this and show people what was going on.” The documentary also features exclusive interviews with Hendrix’s bandmates, Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, along with Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, among others. A special screening of the film will be held at the ArcLight Hollywood theatre on January 31, with a discussion by McDermott, record producer & engineer Eddie Kramer and Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix.
