Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival Set For Summer

Woodstock co-creator Michael Lang has confirmed that a three-day festival honoring the 50th anniversary of the original event will be held at Watkins Glen, New York on August 16, 17 and 18, Rolling Stone reports. The organizers have not revealed any name of performers or specific acts and plans to only reveal after tickets go on sale in February. However, Lang has revealed that over 40 performers have been booked already across three stages, including some big-name headliners. “It’ll be an eclectic bill,” Lang says. “It’ll be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival.” Lang is looking forward to have “newer bands” honor the legacy of the festival by staging “celebrations of artists from the original Woodstock” such as Janis Joplin, The Band and Joe Cocker. “Having contemporary artists interpret that music would be a really interesting and exciting idea,” Lang revealed to Rolling Stone. “We’re also looking for unique collaborations, maybe some reunions and a lot of new and up-and-coming talent.” “We want this to be more than just coming to a concert,” Lang added. “And hopefully a lot of the bands will become part of this effort to get people to stand up and make themselves heard, to get and out vote. And if they don’t have a candidate that represents their feelings, to find one – or to run themselves.” Last month, a competing 50th Woodstock anniversary event was announced by Bethel Woods Center For The Arts, Live Nation and INVNT. The golden anniversary Bethel Woods Music And Culture Festival will be held at the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival. Full details of the lineup for the festival and ticketing will be announced later. Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Richie Havens were among those who performed at the original Woodstock, which was held August 15 – 18, 1969.
