Bohemian Rhapsody has premiered in China, although censors have cut more than two minutes of LGBT content from the film. The biopic about Queen and its frontman Freddie Mercury hit the Chinese market last Friday. However, according to Chinese moviegoers, key scenes about Mercury’s sexuality, including a same-sex kiss, have been cut altogether. Scenes that were deleted include one in which Mercury reveals to his wife that he is not heterosexual. A scene in which Mercury tells the band that he has AIDS has been muted. Rami Malek won Best Actor award for his portrayal of Mercury at this year’s Oscars. Chinese broadcasters also censored his acceptance speech, with subtitles translating “gay man” to “special group”.
