Ice Cube, Stevie Wonder, and Ludacris were among family, friends and dignitaries to mourn at director John Singleton’s private funeral. The private service was held at Angelus Funeral Home in South Los Angeles, the place where Singleton spent part of his childhood and where his career-defining film, Boyz N the Hood, was set. Others who paid their respects included Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, costume designer Ruth Carter, Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray, football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, and actors Ving Rhames, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Taraji P. Henson and Tyrese. Singleton died on April 29 after suffering a stroke. He was 51. The director had been in a coma since suffering a stroke on April 17. In 1992, at the age of 24, Singleton became the youngest person to ever receive an Oscar nomination for best director for Boyz n the Hood, a film based on his experiences growing up in South Central Los Angeles.
