Armed men posing as police officers stole 1,653 pounds of gold, a Brazilian news organization says.
Officials estimate that the stolen gold is worth $30 million.
Eight men allegedly stole the shipment from the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport on Thursday.
The airport says that the gold was on its way to New York and Zurich.
The men were driving two trucks that resembled the trucks of the Brazilian federal police, Agencia Brasil reports.
According to CNN, the Brazil’s Federal Highway Police says eight men may have inside knowledge about operations at the airport.
The Telegraph reports that an airport official and eight members of his extended family were kidnapped. The hostages included four minors. The nine kidnapped people are now safe.
Security cameras caught the thieves’ getaway.
There are no confirmed reports of any shootings or injuries in connection to the gold robbery.
