Dead & Company brought out Justin Vernon to perform a few songs with them at their concert at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wisconsin on Saturday. Vernon sang the last three songs of the Grateful Dead’s quasi-reunion group’s first set, “Black Muddy River,” “Friend of the Devil” and “Bird Song.” Vernon and John Mayer also jammed “Bird Song” with numerous solos. A day ahead of the concert at Alpine Valley, the Bon Iver frontman had tweeted “Nbd sitting in with the dead tonight at alpine.” Vernon, a native of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is no stranger to the Grateful Dead’s music, having previously teamed up with DeYarmond Edison to back Bruce Hornsby on a studio version of “Black Muddy River” for The National’s Day Of The Dead charity compilation in 2016.
