Late rock star Tom Petty’s Gibson SG electric guitar will be auctioned on July 21. Also, one of the top hats that Petty wore on stage will be available for auction, Heritage Auctions announced earlier this week. The guitar, which Petty used during Bob Dylan’s 1987 True Confessions Tour, was bought from his friend, Norm Harris. Petty returned his favorite instrument to Harris after he replaced it with a new guitar. “Both of these things could have been sold years ago, but because I felt these were very special Tom Petty pieces, I hung on to them for years”, Harris said. “I probably would never have sold them, but at 69 years old, I feel it’s time for somebody else to enjoy these great pieces of memorabilia,” he added. The instrument has been signed “Tom Petty / ’88” by the music legend in silver paint. It includes a black and white photo of Dylan and Petty holding the guitar on stage together, with a note on the verso, reading “This was my SG on Dylan Tour ’87 / Tom Petty.” Copyright(c) 2018 RTTNews.com.
