Tom Petty has been awarded songwriting royalties for Sam Smith’s hit song “Stay With Me.” In April 2014 when Smith’s “Stay With Me” was released listeners began to point out the resemblance to Petty’s 1989 song “I Won’t Back Down.” Petty’s lawyers followed suit, recognizing the similarities, which resulted in Petty and Smith settling out of court back in October. The details of the case were only released this past weekend. According to The Sun, the settlement reportedly included a 12.5 percent writing credit to Petty and singer-composer Jeff Lynne. The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) also now includes Smith, Petty, Lynne and Jimmy Napes as chief songwriters for the song. Copyright(c) 2015 RTTNews.com.
