Smith & Sam on 103.5 The Arrow are encouraging listeners to take a closer look at their skin this May for Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., but when caught early, it is highly treatable. Knowing what to look for — and checking your skin regularly — can make a lifesaving difference.
That’s why Smith & Sam are teaming up with Legacy Dermatology to share simple, dermatologist‑approved tips to help spot skin cancer early.
How to Spot Skin Cancer
The ABCDE Rule for Melanoma. Use this quick guide when checking your moles or skin spots:
– Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other
– Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred
– Color: Multiple colors or shades, including black, brown, red, white, or blue
– Diameter: Larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser)
– Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or if a new spot appears
Changing moles are especially important to have checked by a dermatologist.
Signs of Other Skin Cancers (Basal & Squamous Cell)
Not all skin cancers look like moles. Watch for:
– Small, smooth, shiny, pale, or waxy bumps
– Firm red lumps that may bleed or crust
– Flat, red, rough, or scaly patches
– Sores that don’t heal or keep coming back
If a spot doesn’t look or feel right, trust your instincts and have it examined.
Monthly Self‑Exams Matter
– Checking your skin once a month helps you notice changes early.
– Examine your entire body in a well‑lit room
– Use a full‑length mirror and a hand mirror for hard‑to‑see areas
– Don’t forget your scalp, back, underarms, between toes, and soles of feet
– Take photos of moles so you can track changes over time
– The “Ugly Duckling” Rule: Look for any spot that stands out or looks different from the others. That “odd one out” could be a warning sign.
Why Early Detection Is So Important
When skin cancer is found early, treatment is often simpler and more effective. Annual skin exams by a dermatologist, combined with monthly self‑checks at home, offer the best protection.
